About The Cape Organ Guild
The Cape Organ Guild (formerly the Cape Guild of Organists) was founded in 1923 by the then-organist of St George’s Anglican Cathedral, Cape Town, Dr Thomas Barrow-Dowling, who was also the first president (1923/24).
The Guild is reputedly the oldest continuous musical society in South Africa. Among its objectives are the promotion of good fellowship and mutual help between its members in order to foster an interest in the effective presentation of the organ and its music as well as choral music (both sacred and secular). Anyone interested in such objectives is eligible for membership. The Guild’s membership extends over much of the Western Cape and comprises many City organists, country members and people with a general appreciation for the organ and organ music.
