Welcome to The Cape Organ Guild's website
The Cape Organ Guild was founded in 1923 by Dr
Thomas Barrow-Dowling, who was also the first president. The Guild,
based in Cape Town, is reputedly the oldest continuous musical society
in South Africa. Among its objectives are the promotion of good
fellowship and mutual help amongst its members in order to foster an
interest in the effective presentation of the organ and its music as
well as choral music (both sacred and secular). Anyone interested in
such objectives is eligible for membership.
Public recitals (including
the six South African organ festivals, featuring many well known
organists such as Simon Preston and Dame Gillian Weir), lectures,
master-classes and choral concerts are all features of the annual
syllabus, together with many other non-public functions, and are
usually held once a month.
